Getting a Schengen visa from the UK might feel tricky at first, but with the right steps and some clear advice, it can actually be pretty simple.
This guide is designed specifically for non-UK national residing in the UK, providing expert advice on every aspect of the application; from gathering the necessary documents to completing the required steps.
How to Apply for a Schengen Visa from the UK?
To apply for a Schengen visa from the UK, you have to follow these steps:
- Check if You Need a Visa
- Understand the Type of Visa You Need
- Complete Form Application and Schedule Your Visa Appointment
- Prepare the Required Documents for UK Residents
- Attend your Appointment
- Wait For the Visa to Process
- Collect Your Passport
Check if You Need a Visa
Whether or not travelers from the UK require a visa to enter the EU/Schengen area varies depending on nationality.
UK Citizens
Citizens of the United Kingdom with a valid UK passport can travel to 29 European member countries of the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days without having to apply for or obtain a visa for short-term tourism or a business trip. For any trip longer than 90 days, you must apply for the appropriate visa and residence permit.
Entry Requirements for British Citizens Traveling to the EU
Post-Brexit, British citizens must have the following documents to travel to the EU:
- Valid passport*.
- Travel health insurance (such as private travel insurance or an EHIC/GHIC).
- Enough money to cover your stay in the EU.
- Return or onward travel ticket.
- ETIAS Authorization (Starting from April 2027).
* UK Passport Validity
Your UK passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen Area.
Do UK Citizens Need ETIAS?
Currently, UK citizens do not need to apply for an ETIAS authorization as the system has not been implemented yet. However, starting in April 2027, British passport holders will be required to obtain an electronic travel authorization known as ETIAS.
Non-UK Nationals Residing in the UK
If you’re a non-UK citizen legally residing in the UK, you will need a Schengen visa if:
- You hold a passport from a country without a visa liberalization agreement with the EU.
- You were previously denied entry into the Schengen area without a visa.
Holders of British Travel Documents
If you have a British Travel Document with either a blue or red cover (under the Conventions of July 28, 1951, and September 28, 1954), you may be able to visit certain Schengen member countries. However, since regulations frequently change, we recommend contacting the embassy or consulate of the EU/Schengen country you intend to visit before making any travel arrangements.
If you possess a British certificate of travel featuring a black or grey cover, you must apply for a visa before travelling to Europe.
Additionally, ensure that your travel document remains valid for at least three months beyond your departure from the EU/Schengen Area.
Confirm Your Eligibility to Apply from the UK
You can apply for a Schengen visa in the UK only if you are a UK legal resident. You must have a valid residence permit, such as Leave to Remain (LTR) or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which will remain valid for at least one month after you return from the Schengen Area.
As a Non-UK Resident, Where Should I Submit My Application?
If you are not a resident of the United Kingdom, you should apply at the Schengen/EU Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence.
Understand the Type of Visa You Need
UK residents travelling to the EU for short stays (up to 90 days) for tourism, family visits, or business, need a C-type visa (short-stay). For stays over 90 days or other extended purposes, a D-type visa (long-stay or national visa) is required.
During the application process it’s essential to specify the purpose of your visit, as the Schengen visas are granted for various travel purposes, including:
- Tourism and Leisure
- Visiting Family and Friends
- Business
- Official Visits
- Medical Treatment
- Short-term Study Programs or Language Courses
- Cultural, Sports, or Religious Events
If you’re traveling to the Schengen zone for reasons other than short visits or if you intend to stay for more than 90 days, you’ll require a long-stay visa, which is also referred to as a D-type visa or National visa.

Where to Lodge
Where you lodge your visa application in the UK depends on your travel plans:
If Visiting One Schengen Country

- Main Destination: Apply through the country where you’ll spend the most time. (e.g., If you plan to spend a week in Spain and two days in Germany, apply for a Spanish visa.
- Entry Point: If your stay is evenly split across countries, apply through the country you’ll enter first.
Once you’ve determined the appropriate country, locate the Visa Application Centre (VAC) nearest to your residence in the UK. VACs are often managed by partners like VFS Global, TLScontact, or BLS International, depending on the destination country.

FAQ About Scheduling Schengen Visa Appointment in the UK
When to Schedule an Appointment?
You should schedule your Schengen visa appointment in the UK at least 15 days before you plan to travel to the Schengen Area.
However, please note that 15 days is the minimum amount of time required for submitting your application. We suggest that you take into account delays in visa processing or a lack of available appointment slots from the UK and start your application as soon as possible.
The earliest you can apply is six months before you plan to travel.
Rescheduling or Cancelling Appointments
You can reschedule or cancel your appointment through the relevant visa application centre where you originally scheduled it.
Prepare the Required Documents for UK Residents
To apply for a Schengen visa from the UK, you’ll need to provide specific documents as part of a standardized process. These requirements are generally consistent across Schengen member countries, regardless of your destination within the Schengen Area.
Here are the essential documents you need to provide when applying for a Schengen visa in the UK:
- Visa Application Form. You need to complete and sign the visa application form.
- Recent Passport-Sized Photos. Two photos taken within the last three months, meeting the visa photo requirements.
- Valid Passport. Your passport must:
- Be no older than 10 years.
- Be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure from the Schengen area.
- Have two blank pages for the visa stamp.
- If you have previous passports with Schengen visas, include copies.
- Travel insurance from a UK or Schengen-based company. The insurance should have a minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical emergencies and include repatriation in the event of death.
UK residents can get travel insurance from either Europ Assistance or AXA Assistance. These insurance providers are acknowledged and accepted by the EU/Schengen missions in the UK. Moreover, you can cancel the insurance at no cost by submitting proof of a visa rejection.
- Proof of Accommodation. You will need to submit documents showing where you will stay throughout your trip. This can be one of the following:
- Hotel or hostel bookings,

How Much Money Do I Need to Apply for a Schengen Visa in the UK?
To apply for a Schengen Visa from the UK, you must demonstrate that you have enough funds to support your visit to the Schengen area. The required minimum bank balance varies depending on the specific Schengen country you’re applying to, ranging from £13 to £90 per day.
Learn more about proving your financial sufficiency and check the required balances for each Schengen country here.
Attend your Appointment
On the day of your appointment, you have to show up on time, have your passport, application form, and all the required documents with you, and have enough money to pay the visa fee if you haven’t already paid online while scheduling the appointment.
For a detailed guide on common questions asked during a visa interview and tips for preparation, visit Schengen Visa Interview Prep: Key Questions to Know.
Paying the Application Fee
Visa Fee for the UK Residents
The standard fee for a Schengen visa is 90 EUR (appx. GBP 75). If applying through a visa application centre, you have to pay an additional service fee.
You can pay the fee in cash, through a credit or debit card, or through a payment slip (depending on which visa centre or embassy you apply to).
Biometric Data
On your appointment, you will need to submit a biometric visa photo as well as scans of your fingerprints. Your biometric information is taken for security and identification reasons and is stored in the Visa Information System (VIS).
If you have applied for a Schengen visa in the last five years, your information is still stored in VIS, and you may be exempted from submitting fingerprint scans again.
Wait For the Visa to Process
In the UK, a Schengen visa application usually takes 15 days to process. However, this timeframe could be extended up to 45 days if the consulate requires additional documents or if there’s a high volume of applications, especially before holidays, or due to other reasons delaying the process.
This is why it is important to apply well ahead of time!
Tracking Your Application
Since most applications in the UK are submitted through a visa application centre (VAC), you can typically track the status of your application through the VAC’s website.
To see your application status, you just need to enter your visa reference number (usually found on the application fee slip) and your last name.
If you applied through a Schengen embassy or consulate, it may not be possible to track your application.
Receiving a Visa Decision
If your visa is granted, the Schengen visa will be affixed to your passport, and you will be able to travel to the Schengen Area within the dates specified on the visa sticker.
If your visa is rejected, the reason for the rejection will be stated in the decision letter. You can either re-apply for the visa or try to appeal the decision. Whether you can appeal a decision (and how) will also be stated on the visa decision letter.
Collect Your Passport
Once your application has been processed, you have to pick up your passport from the visa application centre or Schengen embassy/consulate. You can go pick it up yourself in person, or (if the option is available) you can opt for it to be sent to you through a courier service.
Entering the Schengen Area from the UK as a Non-British Citizen
As a non-British citizen, when travelling to the Schengen Area you must have the following documents with you:
- Your valid passport (with at least 3 months validity beyond your intended stay)
- Schengen visa, affixed to your passport
- Travel itinerary (including flight reservations and other planned activities)
- Proof of travel health insurance (with coverage of at least €30,000 across the Schengen Area)
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay in the Schengen Area (e.g., bank statements, credit cards, sponsor letter, etc)
- Proof of accommodation (hotel reservations, rental agreements, or letter of invitation)
- Any other relevant documents, such as an invitation letter from a friend, family member, or organisation, acceptance letter in a short-term study course, proof of business you plan to conduct in the Schengen Area, proof you will attend a cultural event, etc.

As a tourist visiting the UK, am I eligible to apply for a Schengen Visa from the UK?
If you’re visiting the U.K. as a tourist and don’t hold a U.K. residence permit, you’re unable to apply from within the U.K. You must apply from your home country instead.
Can an Indian passport holder apply for a Schengen visa from the UK?
Yes, Indian citizens and passport holders who have been legally residing in the United Kingdom for more than three months can apply for a Schengen visa in the UK.
