AXA Schengen Insurance: Coverage Options and Benefits Explained

AXA Schengen InsuranceOne of the main requirements of a Schengen visa application is a valid travel health insurance policy, which complies with the Schengen visa insurance requirements. Additionally, you must make sure you purchase from a reputable company, as healthcare costs in most Schengen countries are too high to pay out of pocket.

AXA Schengen insurance offers three different policies, which befit all types of travellers, and issues Insurance Certificates which you can submit at any Schengen Embassy, Consulate, or Visa Application Center.

AXA Schengen Insurance Plans

  • Schengen Low Cost. This plan starts at €22 per week and offers the minimum required coverage for the Schengen visa application (€30,000). This is the option for adult travellers on a tight budget. Minors are not covered by this plan.
  • Schengen Europe Travel. This plan starts at €33 per week and offers coverage up to €100,000. It also includes coverage for minors, theft of valuables, and other emergencies, so it is suited for family trips.
  • Schengen Multi-Trip. This plan costs €328 per year per person and is best suited for frequent travellers as you are covered for unlimited trips for one year.

How to Purchase AXA Schengen Insurance?

You can only purchase insurance plans online, through the official website, by following these steps:

When you purchase insurance on AXA Schengen, you will create an account that you can use to access information regarding your policy, download your Insurance Certificate, as well as register a Claim if you need to later on.

When to Purchase?

You must purchase AXA Schengen Insurance before your trip starts – coverage will start when you depart for the Schengen Zone. You cannot buy an insurance policy after having travelled to Schengen.

Who Can Purchase?

Anyone who wants to travel to the Schengen Zone can apply for AXA Schengen travel insurance, regardless of nationality or Schengen visa requirements.

Naturally, travel insurance is obligatory for those who are subject to Schengen visas, but you can purchase a travel insurance plan with AXA even if you are an EU national or someone who can travel to the Schengen zone visa-free.

How Can AXA Help in a Medical Incident?

If you are in a medical incident while abroad, you can contact AXA via their 24/7 call centre, who will get in touch with the local attending physician and assist you as appropriate. Naturally, in an emergency, you must first contact the local authorities or emergency services.

In medical incidents, AXA Schengen Insurance pays for the following:

  • Medical and surgical fees
  • Prescription medication.
  • Urgent dental care (up to €150 per person).
  • Hospitalization.
  • Local medical transportation, if ordered by a doctor.

If the medical costs are high, then AXA will pay them directly so that you do not have any massive out-of-pocket expenses. If you pay yourself, then you can make a claim and you will be reimbursed later.

Does AXA Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?

In most cases, travel insurance companies do not offer coverage for any serious pre-existing medical conditions. However, you should still declare any conditions you may have so that AXA can show you the amount of coverage you are offered. If you do not disclose a condition, then you will not be covered during your trip.

If I Do Not Get My Schengen Visa, Will I Be Reimbursed?

If your Schengen visa application is rejected, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your AXA Travel Insurance. You must submit the rejection letter, along with any other documents that the company requires. They will offer a full refund via the same method which you paid.

Can I Include My Family Members in My Insurance Policy?

Yes, you can include up to ten people under one application and one payment.

Can I Pay for Someone Else?

Yes, you can pay for someone else’s AXA Insurance Policy. When purchasing, you will be required to distinguish between the policy holder (the person paying for the policy) and the beneficiary (the person who will travel to the Schengen Zone and use the policy).

The Insurance Certificate will hold the name of the insured, not that of the payer.

Can I Extend My AXA Schengen Insurance?

In most cases, you cannot extend your insurance policy if you are still inside Schengen borders. However, you may be able to request an extension if:
